Tournament Postflop

Lesson 27 · Short stacks, bubbles, and ICM pressure · 24 practice questions

Short stack = low SPR

Tournament short stacks create low SPR by default. Commit with top pair+; fold marginal hands faster.

Push/fold dynamics

With 15bb or less, many spots become push/fold. Overpairs and top pair often commit.

ICM pressure

Near the bubble, tighten up — survival has value. Avoid marginal spots.

Key takeaways

• Short stacks = low SPR, commit with top pair+.
• Push/fold with <15bb effective.
• ICM: tighten near bubble, avoid marginal spots.

FAQ

How does ICM change postflop tournament play?

ICM makes busting out costlier than chips won, so you play tighter near pay jumps and bubbles — avoiding thin stack-offs the pure-chip (cash) math would call correct.

Why play tighter on the bubble?

On the bubble the risk of busting just before the money outweighs the reward of extra chips, so marginal spots that are break-even in chips become clear folds under ICM.
