Scare Card

A scare card is a turn or river card that changes who is ahead — a third flush card, a fourth card to a straight, an overcard to a pair. It gives the bettor new value hands and a credible story to bluff with.

When you are defending, scare cards make your one-pair hands lose value, and the weakest of them become folds — not because villain always has it, but because they now beat only his bluffs while his value range has grown. The price still matters: against a small bet you keep calling; against a big bet on a bad card, the bottom of your range goes. Keep the pairs that hold a blocker or a redraw, and judge the hand by what it is now, not what it was on the flop.

When you are betting, scare cards are bluffing opportunities — but only if they scare villain’s range more than yours. An ace on a turn after the raiser checked back the flop is a card his capped range hates. A card that pairs the caller’s hands or completes his draws is a give-up for the bettor. Players who did not plan the turn on the flop barrel scare cards that scare only themselves and give up on cards that were great for their range.

Worked example

Turn Q♥8♥3♦2♥: the flush comes in, villain bets 14 into 16 and you hold Q♣J♦ with no heart. You need 14 ÷ (16 + 14 + 14) = 32%. Top pair is now a bluff-catcher without a redraw — folding is the standard line. Compare K♠9♦5♣2♥ with K♥Q♥ facing 12 into 18: nothing changed on the turn, and top pair with a good kicker calls comfortably.

FAQ

What is a scare card in poker?

A card that makes a stronger hand possible for the bettor — a flush card, a straight card or an overcard. It changes the relative strength of hands and gives the bettor a believable reason to keep betting.

Should you always bluff scare cards?

Only when the card hurts villain’s range more than yours. Barreling a card that completes the caller’s draws, or pairs his hands, is betting into the range that just improved.
