Overbetting

Lesson 20 · When to bet bigger than the pot · 24 practice questions

Overbet = polarized

Overbets (>pot) are heavily polarized — nuts or bluffs. Medium hands should almost always fold.

Value overbet

Overbet for value when villain's range is capped and you hold the nuts (or near-nuts). Extract max from strong hands.

Bluff overbet

Bluff overbet on scare cards when you block villain's calling range. Needs fold equity — don't overbet into stations.

Key takeaways

• Overbets are polarized — fold medium strength.
• Value overbet when villain is capped and you have nuts.
• Bluff overbet with blockers on scare cards; fold vs overbets without nut blockers.

FAQ

What is an overbet and when is it used?

An overbet is a bet larger than the pot. Use it with a polarized range — strong value plus bluffs — on cards and boards where you hold the nut advantage and the opponent’s range is capped.

Why do overbets need a nut advantage?

Overbetting risks a lot, so it needs the top of the range to be credible. Without nut advantage a large bet is easy to bluff-catch and re-raise, turning it into a losing play.
