A bluff catcher is a hand that beats only your opponent’s bluffs, not their value bets. You call with it to stop the opponent from bluffing profitably, choosing the ones that block their value.
On a polarized river, most of your calling range is bluff catchers — hands like a middling pair that beat air but lose to any value. Your job is to call enough of them to meet the MDF, and to pick the specific combos that block the opponent’s value hands and unblock their bluffs.
Against balanced opponents a bluff catcher is a break-even call by design. The profit comes from exploitation: fold more of them versus players who under-bluff, and call them all down versus players who bluff too much.
Prefer combos that block the opponent’s value hands and don’t block their bluffs — that makes it likelier you’re facing a bluff and less likely they hold a call.
Against a balanced bettor it’s break-even by design. It becomes profitable when the opponent bluffs too often, and a fold when they rarely bluff.
