Pot odds compare the cost of a call to the total pot you can win. If the pot is 100 and you must call 50, you are getting 150:50 = 3:1. You need to win more than 25% of the time for a call to break even.
Facing a bet, MDF is the minimum fraction of your range that must continue so villain can't profit by betting any two cards: MDF = 1 − bet/(pot+bet). Vs a pot bet: 50%. It's a range rule — a single hand may fold or call, but on average you must hit MDF.
Implied odds add the chips you expect to win after hitting — a call short on direct odds can still be right if you stack villain later. Reverse implied odds are the chips you lose when you hit but stay dominated (small flush vs big flush). Implied odds matter most deep, on draw-heavy boards, vs players who pay off.
• Pot odds = call cost vs final pot; break-even equity = call/(pot+call).
• MDF = 1 − bet/(pot+bet) — defend your range so bluffs can't auto-profit.
• Implied odds reward draws that win more later; reverse implied odds punish dominated hands.
100bb deep. Flop, villain bets 1/3 pot. You hold the nut flush draw with two overcards. Best action?
Board: Q♠ 7♠ 2♥
Your hand: A♠ K♠
Best action: Call Raise
Why: ✓ You hold nut flush draw(9) — about 9 outs (≈19% to hit on one card), and facing 2 into 6 you need 20% (4:1). The one-card 19% is short of 20%, but implied odds plus semi-bluff fold equity favour continuing — call/raise is right.
Pot odds are the ratio of the current pot to the price of a call. Calling 40 into a pot of 120 lays 3:1, so you need about 25% equity to break even.
MDF is the share of your range you must continue with so a bettor can’t profitably bluff any two cards. It equals pot ÷ (pot + bet) — against a pot-sized bet, MDF is 50%.
